Pettitte pitched into the fifth inning and wound up with a no-decision as the Devil Rays won on a Luis Vizcaino wild pitch in the eighth inning just before a late-game snow squall enveloped Yankee Stadium.
"It definitely wasn't the way I wanted it to go in my first outing," said Pettitte, who yielded six hits and four runs, just two of them earned, in four-plus innings of work. He threw 83 pitches in 38-degree temperatures. "The biggest disappointment is we didn't win the game."
Pettitte, however, was not the only culprit. The Yankees committed three errors, two by Derek Jeter, and a passed ball. And when they had a chance to pull the game out in the bottom of the eighth, Bobby Abreu and Alex Rodriguez failed with the bases loaded.
